Western civilisation makes life easy for us

There might not be much happening on Salty Lass, but we are determined to at least try and make videos of our life on Salty Lass.

In our last video people had commented that they wanted to see more about what is happening around us. So Beverley, being Beverley, decided to do just that, and started this episode in the heads. I doubt anybody is interested in what is happening in the heads, and certainly not what is happening behind Beverley, but it is what it is.

Seeing as we are not sailing, Beverley and I have decided to do projects so that we can have Salty Lass the best that she can be. So we have started in the galley, we have started in the galley because there is not much to do, and the cost of materials is quite cheap.

So for this simple job we need:-

  • A yoga mat - for adding a lining to the fridge
  • A bath mat - for allowing a drainage space for the fridge
  • A variety of hooks - For adding vertical storage where I can
  • A chain for my plug - I might need two of these
  • Cleaning materials - Everything needs a good clean
  • Sealant - For sealing the side of the sink and worktop
  • Rust stop - We have rust on Salty Lass
  • Metal paint - Once he rust is removed, we need to paint the metal
  • Anti slip mat - For lining cupboards and replacing old kitchen liners

We started with the rails for the draws as I thought that this would take the longest to do. When you live on a boat, things just seem to be awkward, so the space where we needed a drill was barely big enough to fit the drill. So we had to use a smaller drill bit to do the job rather than the one we wanted which would have been too long. It took so long for Beverley to remove the rails, which really did need treatment, that Beverley got a serious attack of pins and needles in her legs, so much so she couldn't get up.

While Beverley was removing the side rails, I cleaned the draws and replaced all the mild steel screws that attached the draw rails with stainless steel. I simply proved to myself that the screws were mild steel by using the magnet on my camera case and the screws stuck.

Once Beverley had removed the rail, we peeled off all the old paint, then sanded the rail, used rust eater on the rail before cleaning it with acetone. It was only then that the rail was prepared for painting. When we were reading the instructions for the paint, we found out that it would take a full week for the paint to dry. Next time I will read the instructions more. To get the rails at the right height Beverley made a shim out of a coffee stirrer. So Beverley's argument went

  • We needed coffee to create the age of enlightenment
  • We need coffee stirrers to stir our coffee
  • We can use the coffee stirrer to make a shim, so it makes life easy for us.

Another little job that I did was add brass hooks to the inside of the cupboard. These I will be using for brushes, gloves and pegs. It's just a way of adding vertical storage to my cupboards.
